Located on the eastern edge of Sumas Mountain, this scenic lookout provides sweeping views of the Fraser River, Chilliwack, and the sprawling farmland below – all framed by the dramatic peaks of the North Cascades in the distance.

Unlike more popular Lower Mainland viewpoints such as Eagle Bluffs or the Grouse Grind, the Sumas Eastern Lookout remains relatively quiet. Its remoteness and less-developed access keep foot traffic light, making it an ideal escape for those looking to avoid the crowds.

The final approach to the lookout involves a short walk through dense coniferous forest, opening up suddenly to a rocky bluff where the view unfolds. On a clear day, visitors can spot landmarks like Mount Cheam, Vedder Mountain, and even parts of Washington State to the south.

The Hikes:

For those hiking in, expect a moderately challenging trek with some elevation gain, rewarded by the peaceful forest setting, minimal crowds and the great views of Chadsey Lake.

– The longest hike is the Sumas Mountain Trail, a 14.2 km (8.8 miles) out-and-back hike with 3,188 feet (972 meters) of elevation gain. This trail takes approximately 6 hours to complete from the base of the mountain.

– A shorter hike from the upper parking lot is an 7.4 km (4.6 mile) loop with about 1,194 feet (364 meters) of elevation gain. This is the recommended hike to the Eastern Lookout and takes about 2.5 hours to complete.

– The shortest hike is via the service road from the upper parking lot or to make it even shorter, from the gate at the end of the service road. Depending on where you start this out and back trail, it will only take you about 1-2 hours to complete.

– A Bonus hike is the Baker’s Grind, an intense 3.9 km (2.4 miles) out-and-back trek that is considered the most challenging hike to the lookout. The trail is steep, muddy, soft and often said to be no joke. Will you attempt it?

Getting There:

Getting there depends on your vehicle’s capabilitiesl, the longer routes start from paved roads, while the shorter, easier trails all start from the service road that requires good tires and a bit of ground clearance.
