Known for its striking polka-dot-like patterns during the summer months, this saline lake is a geological and cultural treasure. The lake is rich in magnesium Sulfate, calcium, and sodium Sulfates, among other minerals.
During the summer, much of the lake’s water evaporates under the heat, leaving behind mineral deposits that form round, colorful spots. The color of these spots varies depending on the mineral composition, creating hues ranging from white and yellow to green and blue.
Better Lookout:
The main lookout is the best place to learn about the lake, but it’s not the Best View Point. About halfway down the lake, there is a small gravel road just off the main road that will take you to the original lookout, a lookout that gives you a view of the entire lake from a much closer distance!
Cultural:
For centuries, Spotted Lake has been revered by First Nations people, who regard it as a sacred site. The lake is believed to possess healing properties, and its waters and mud have been used in traditional medicine practices.
Getting There:
Spotted Lake is located just off Highway 3, about 10 kilometers west of Osoyoos, British Columbia. While direct access to the lake is prohibited to safeguard its delicate ecosystem and cultural value, visitors can view the lake from a designated roadside pullout.
