Mount Erie is the highest point on Fidalgo Island and the views of Washington are stunning all year round. The mountain also offers so much more like hiking, climbing, and a great place for a picnic.
Mount Erie was named in 1841 by the Wilkes Expedition for the Battle of Lake Erie. The summit sits at an elevation of 1,273 ft (388 meters) and on a clear day you will be able to see Mount Baker which is about 43 miles (69 km) away.
Love Locks:
At the main viewing platform at Mount Erie, you will find plenty of padlocks locked to the railing, these are known as love locks if you didn’t know. Take a padlock with you, lock it to the railing and toss the key off the lookout to symbolize unbreakable love with your partner.
Trails:
Mount Erie Park has 6 main hiking trails that range from easy to difficult.
1. Sugarloaf Mountain and Mount Erie Loop Trail – 7.1 km (4.4 miles) loop with steep inclines and rocky sections.
2. Whistle Lake Trail – 5.8 km (3.6 miles) loop that is moderately challenging with some elevation gain.
3. Whistle Lake from Mount Erie – 8.4 km (5.2 miles) moderately challenging loop starting at the summit.
4. Erie Mountain Via Whistle Lake Trail – 7.2 km (4.47 miles) out-and-back trail that is popular with the locals.
5. Mount Erie and Whistle Lake Loop – 11.1 km (6.9 miles) loop through lush forests, lakes, bogs, and rocky balds.
6. Mount Erie Rock Climbing Sunshine Wall – 3.1 km (1.9 miles) out and back trail that’s considered highly challenging.
Getting There:
Getting to the viewpoint is easy but be sure to watch for potholes as the old road is not in the greatest of shape. The area offers some parking but is often full so head up early.

Be sure to check out Deceptions Pass or Tidal Pools as you’re in the area, or take a drive further down the island and visit a Lighthouse or an old War Site.
