Tucked within Montague Harbour Marine Provincial Park, Gray Peninsula is one of Galiano Island’s most serene and scenic coastal treasures.
The rugged shoreline, sculpted from sandstone bedrock, reveals rippling patterns etched by glacial and tidal forces. Whether you wander the shell-laced beaches, pause under arbutus trees, or time your walk with the sunset, you’ll find a quiet richness that’s classically Gulf Islands.
Perfect for families, solo walkers, or kayakers seeking a calm shore to explore, Gray Peninsula is a quiet icon of British Columbia’s marine park gems on Galiano.
Secret Cave:
At the far end of the Peninsula, you will find a sandstone cave large enough to fit three to four people comfortably. The cave is a great spot to relax and watch the sailboats come and go.
Trail:
From the peninsula’s ledges, hikers are treated to stunning views of Montague Harbour, Parker and Saltspring Islands, and even Mount Baker on clear days.
The Gray Point Trail is an easy 2.1 km (1.3 mile) loop that takes about 30 minutes to complete.
The Name:
Gray Peninsula is said to take its name from one of two sources:
– From Capt. Gray, who planted orchards here in the 1890s; remnants of these early trees can still be found.
– From its geological description: the region’s grey sandstone bedrock and the broad rocky headland.
