Cheam Peak is one of the most iconic and sought-after hiking destinations in British Columbia, towering at 6,903 feet (2,104 meters) with rugged terrain, breathtaking views, and rich natural beauty.
The best time to hike Cheam Peak is typically from late June to early September. This window allows hikers to experience the peak in full alpine glory, with wildflowers in bloom and the trails mostly free of snow.
Once at the summit of Cheam Peak, the panoramic views are absolutely worth the effort. On a clear day, hikers are treated to a sweeping vista of the Fraser Valley, including Jones Lake and the surrounding mountains. To the north, the majestic Mount Baker in Washington State can often be seen, adding an extra layer of beauty to the scene.
The Hike:
For outdoor lovers, hiking Cheam Peak is a must-do experience. There are two main routes to reach the summit and one alternative, the traditional route from the Mount Cheam parking lot, the more technical route from the base of the mountain near Bridal Falls, and the alternative route that is also from the parking lot.
The Main Route: The most popular route is from the parking lot. This route is the shortest but requires a high-clearance 4×4 vehicle. This 8.7 km (5.4 miles) out-and-back trail has an elevation gain of 2,227 feet (679 meters).
– From The Base: The longest hike that only requires two feet is from the base of the mountain near Bridal Falls. This 31.2 km (19.4 miles) out-and-back trail has an elevation gain of 6,667 feet (2,032 meters).
– Alternative Parking Lot Route: There is an alternate route to the peak from the parking lot that takes part of the base trail. This 8.7 km (5.4 miles) out-and-back trail has an elevation gain of 2,549 feet (777 meters). A good change for a recurring Cheam Peak hiker!
Getting There:
Getting to the parking lot is a 14.7 km (9.1 mile) service road filled with deep ditches and difficult terrain, most people with high clearance 4x4s still stop before the last washout as it requires some added skill or a locking differential to pass.
