Canoe Mountain offers unparalleled views of the rocky mountains and breathtaking sunsets and sunrises, if you enjoy offroading adventures, this is one you should not miss out on!
Something that will be sure to catch your eye on the mountain is the large divot next to the peak. This is known as a Cirque, a valley-like divot formed by glacial erosion.
The tower on Canoe Mountain is the CBC TV tower, once known as the Trans Canada Microwave System which was originally built in the 1950s and used to carry telephone and television signals across Canada.
Just across the lake, you will notice a very tall mountain peak, this is Mount Robson, the highest point in the Canadian Rockies at a total elevation of 12,972 ft (3,954 Meters)
Highest Road:
Canoe Mountain has the highest drivable peak in the Canadian Rockies and all of British Columbia with an elevation of 8,698 ft (2,651 meters). This makes it the highest road in Canada, the 12th highest road in North America, or the 3rd highest on the West Coast.
Camping:
Camping is great here as the sky is dark and the views are amazing, the wind at night can get strong and there is not much at the top of the mountain to break the wind, you will find many areas on your way up the mountain to camp with some coverage if needed.
Weather:
With the high elevation, you should expect a significant difference in weather from the base. The peak is located in a subarctic climate zone with snowy winters and mild summers. Temperatures in the winter will drop below -20 Celsius or -30 Celsius with wind chill factors.
Getting There:
Getting there requires a high clearance 4×4 capable vehicle with great tires, the road up the mountain is 12.2 kms (7.5 miles) and single lane, there are many areas to move to the side and allow others to pass but the road itself is extremely rocky and could cause tire punctures.
The route that Google Maps suggests will not take you to the peak, so be sure to plan our climb.
